The House of Representatives yesterday proposed 30 years as minimum age requirement for the office of president, governor and senate and 25 for members of the House of Representatives.
The lawmakers passed into second reading a bill seeking to alter relevant sections of the 1999 constitution to effect the change which, they said, was meant to encourage youth participation in seeking elective offices.
The bill, sponsored by Rep Tony Nwulu, says Sections 65, 106, 131 and 177 of the 1999 constitution (as amended) are to be further amended to pave way to reduce the age bracket.
He said the bill would reduce age requirements from 40 to 30 years for the office of president, 35 to 30 for the office of governor, 35 to 30 for senate, and 30 to 25 years for the House of Representatives.
The bill also seeks to mainstream independent candidacy into the country’s electoral process.
